718

I met Michael coming out of Penn Station right next to Madison Square
Garden
.

I first spoke to him about this tattoo for my Tattoosday blog, but as the
New York correspondent for KnuckleTattoos.com, I had to ask about his
left hand, which comes with a one-and-a-half tattoo bonus.

First the knuckles:

718 Knuckles

Nothing fancy, just the numbers seven, one and eight. New Yorkers, of
course, recognize this as the (718) area code, which is synonymous with the
outer boroughs of New York City, namely the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and
Staten Island.

Michael has these digits on his digits to symbolize that he is born and
raised in the 718, namely Queens and Brooklyn.

The tattoo was inked at Pete & Cubo’s Tattoo & Body Piercing in Queens. Their work has appeared previously on Tattoosday here.

The one and a half bonus tattoos are on and above the hand.

He has Marilyn Monroe’s eyes represented on the back of his hand to remind
him of his path to sobriety. Michael regards most photos of Monroe with a
degree of recognition – that her eyes appear hazy from drug use. Her demise
due to a drug overdose is significant enough to remind him to stay focused
on remaining clean. He has been (as of January 9, 2009) for three years and
five months.

Finally, the “half” tattoo is the bottom of the rosary, whose thread runs
the length of his forearm to just above the wrist.

Thanks to Michael for sharing his ink both here and on Tattoosday!

HAUS WIFE

haus_wife

I found these knuckles on LiveJournal a ways back and contacted the photographer Mikey Krzyzanowski of Drop Dead Photos. The model’s name is Deb De Vine and this is her story:

Getting my knuckles tattooed was one of the most exciting thing i’ve had done, the reason why i chose to have them done was the fact for plain old shock value, no one would expect someone who  dresses proper, and dose not look “the part” to have such a place inked. As for the phrase ‘Haus Wife’ my husband is a german teacher, hence the spelling, and i always have pictured myself as the perfect wife to come home to

so i know its hokey but its me.

UPDATE: Since several people ponited me towards google translate, I’ve gone ahead and added the rough English translation:

Liz Has Lucky Knuckles

I spotted these lucky knuckles in Penn Station on Liz, who was waiting for a train during rush hour:

lucky-knuckles

She likes the symbolism of the four card suits which serves to remind her that “life is a gamble”. These are on her right hand. Her left hand is still knuckle tattoo-free.

These were inked at Wyld Chyld Tattoo in Merrick, New York.

Check out one of her other tattoos over on Tattoosday.

Thanks to Liz for sharing these with us here on KnuckleTattoos.com!

HALF DEAD

I met Jon Williams today at Flip Happy Crepes and he was kind enough to let me photograph his knuckles. He is a furniture maker by trade. His story is that his knuckles are a commemorative piece for his twin brother who passed away.

LIVE FREE

live_free

JR sends us these knuckles. They were tattooed at The Basement Ink in Oak Forest by Stacy.

I have LIVE FREE on my knuckles. To me this is a testement to living free, in more ways than one. Most importantly to me it means to not let any one or anything keep you from what you want. Your mind, body and soul are your’s and your’s only. The way you choose to live is up to you. Once I started to get tatted more and more everyone told me about the stigma of never going to find a job, and how it is not appropriate, and all that horse shit. So it was also my F**K off statement to all the haters. I think that tattoos are an amazing form of art work and I see my body as a canvass for and amazing artist. And it is reminder that I want to live free literally as in no JAIL for me. I did a short amount of time and the guards would always say how Ironic it was that my knuckles said LIVE FREE and I just called em douche bags and left it at that.

HOPELESS – ROMANTIC

hopeless_romantic

Kalina  sends us these awesome double deckers:

I had been wanting to get something on my knuckles for some time now, but never really knew what to get. So I began thinking of things I would want. I also knew I wanted to get a Hopeless Romantic tattoo on me somewhere, because that is pretty much me in a nutshell. Honestly I am pretty sure The Notebook is my favorite movie…. I was so excited when I realize that it would fit perfectly on my knuckles, So I found the font I wanted and put a skull with a bow in with the Hopeless and a heart with crossbones in with the romantic. Kinda ties it all in together and if you just look at that finger, I like to think it says toxic love….
